The Art of Julia C. Joyce
I’ve always had a flowering imagination and the drive to be creative. I’ve been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil- lots of unproportioned drawings of horses and magical girls. I doodled mainly for fun, but around seventh grade I was inspired by friends to work harder to improve, and got a sketchbook and Prismacolor pencils. Art classes in school gave me a chance to work with more sophisticated materials, for which I am ever grateful.
It’s hard to pin down a point in time where my style became what it is today, and I believe it will continue to evolve. Some symbols and motifs that continually appear in my works are: lightbulbs, vines, anatomical hearts, and flowers. I like to use the ‘secret language of flowers’ to add another layer of meaning to my pieces. I also use color liberally, and I love vibrant and powerful colors that contrast but also unify my pieces. My favorite medium is acrylic, but I also enjoy combining watercolor and ink in pieces, and then just plain pencil.
In the future, I’d like to put my art skills as well as my storytelling skills together and create a webcomic, although I doubt I’ll ever have time. I’d also like to continue to paint, just for fun. I intend to study Classics and Ancient History in college.
